Blog Post #4

Today I'm going to be talking about the media and how it effects political views. I have done research on the Hong Kong protest and I have two news sources, Washington post and Fox news, Washington post coming from a liberal view point and fox news coming from a conservative view point.

The Hong Kong began on March 31, 2019 and is still on going. The people of Hong Kong are protesting was because of the proposed legislation Hong Kong extradition bill. They are also demanding for the government to stop calling protesters as "rioters" and are against the police for arresting some protesters and an independent inquiry for police behavior.

The first source I am going to be talking about is from the news source Washington post which is from a liberals view point. The article is basically about China vowing to prevent foreign powers from interfering in Hong Kong’s affairs and carrying out acts of separatism, subversion, infiltration and sabotage. In the article they are with the protesters and believe that what China is doing is "wrong and not liberal".  I believe this article is very far left because they don't really have any counterclaims and don't look at the view point from the other sides perspective of the protesters being violent. I believe that the people of Hong Kong should be protesting but I believe they are wrong with their violent acts of protesting. I don't think this article is influenced by any political, social, cultural and/or economic context. However, the evidence they use in their article is very convincing, they have quotes from political leaders of Hong Kong and the bad things they say, what some of the protesters are saying and statistics of the police brutality that's going on in Hong Kong .

The second source I am going to be talking about is from Fox News which is from a conservative view point. In the article, it talks about how water canons are being sprayed on protesters and tear gas being let off on protesters by the police in Hong Kong. This news article seems very neutral and doesn't seem like it is influenced by any political, social, cultural and/or economic context. The evidence they provide in the article are statistics on who has been injured by the police and some live shots of the police letting off the tear gas on some protesters.

Answering the question "How might the media influence an individual’s political beliefs?" I think that media is a big way of persuading people onto a side, either that is with facts or with trying to use emotion. For the Hong Kong protest everything was pretty neutral, there wasn't bashing of the other side but they didn't look at another view point which I believe that they should.
